The Telescopic Hydraulic Cylinder – Aspects Of Design And Industries Involved

by | Oct 16, 2015 | Hydraulic and Pneumatic

As the name implies, the design of the telescopic hydraulic cylinder is based on a series of steel tubes also referred to as stages. When fully extended, the design enables the cylinder to provide for a long stroke. The system also limits the number of stages to six. With a long stroke, the system can achieve a 20 to 40% extension rate. When it’s compact it occupies a much smaller space.

It’s All About the Design
The construction industry relies on the telescopic hydraulic cylinder at building sites. The dump truck is a perfect example. It needs to offload materials from the truck’s bed. The hydraulics give it the lift to offload. Then, the hydraulic system can retract bringing the bed down to its secured position on the truck’s chassis. Here is a list of some of the many industries that count on the telescopic design:

  • Agriculture
  • Forestry
  • Construction
  • Manufacturing
  • Gas & Oil
  • Material Handling
  • Marine
  • OEM Manufacturers
  • Mining
  • Waste Management
  • Transportation

Standard Crosstube Hydraulics
There are many types of standard telescopic hydraulic cylinders and a variety of engineering designs that can be developed to generate a custom solution. A crosstube cylinder uses welded components and it, too, compacts to a very small space. The simplistic design relies on built-in grease fittings at the end tube and they typically are stronger with an exceptional long stroke.

Standard Components for Telescopic
Trunnion pivot mounts are fixed to the steel rod, cap end or at the intermediate position. This mount is primarily designed and used for long stroke and shear heavy loads. Manufacturers recommend trunnion intermediate mounts as an added support. They should not be installed with a hydraulic system that requires bending.

Customized Hydraulic Systems
The demand for telescopic hydraulic systems is high and manufacturers have an inventory of the more standard systems. Manufacturers can also design a hydraulic system that meets a customer’s custom specifications, but be sure to allow the necessary time for the design and build to occur. Like any special order, building these components requires precision. Be prepared to talk through this and all other requirements during the design phase.
