Testing for Carbon Monoxide Poisoning

by | Nov 28, 2017 | Business

Home maintenance is something that many people consider to be a priority. Security system companies offer a lot of options for improving the safety of a home, including alarms and automatic calls to police or emergency services. Some security system companies even offer carbon monoxide alarms now because carbon monoxide has injured or even killed people in their own homes.

Currently, security companies detect carbon monoxide by using electronic gas detectors. But this service can be expensive. For many people, a carbon monoxide detector can seem unnecessary because they do not have gas powered appliances. However, fireplaces and chimneys can also lead to carbon monoxide poisoning if the flue is blocked. Even simple things such as some cleaning products can cause carbon monoxide poisoning.

Testing for Carbon Monoxide

For companies or individuals who cannot afford or choose not to employ an electronic carbon monoxide detection system, there are more affordable options. For example, a portable electronic gas detector that is used by emergency services or the mining industry is a one time purchase, not a reoccurring bill. Electronic gas detectors are accurate, unaffected by the temperature of the area, and are not influence by other gases present. If carbon monoxide poisoning is suspected, this is the tool used to detect carbon monoxide in a building.

An even more affordable option is a gas tube detector. Tube detectors require a hand pump to pull air into the tube, which has a colorimetric system with a reagent that causes a stain to show the type of gas and concentration of gas in the air. Stain tube detectors are inexpensive and easy to store. They are affected by the temperature of an area, but these tubes are mostly used in areas that are climate controlled. Many companies use stain tube detectors because they are efficient and affordable for the few jobs that require gas detection. If the company has a high volume of gas detection jobs however, an electronic gas detector is the better option.
