When it comes to machining metals and metal applications at your business, you want to make sure you’re buying the right kind of metal. Obviously, strength and durability are most important, but you want to make sure you’re not spending more than you have to. Inconel, or incon, is an incredibly popular metal for manufacturing purposes. Knowing which metal is right for your job at hand will allow you to spend only what you need to spend, while still getting a metal that helps you further your business. So, what is Inconel and why do you need it?
A Brief Introduction
Inconel is a metal that is corrosion and oxidation resistant. The word in general refers to a class of alloys, with 625 being one of the most popular. One of the most defining features of inconel alloys is their ability to form passivating oxide layers when they’re heated. These layers are very stable and very thick, which makes them great for high temperature uses. Furthermore, their use in high temperature applications is ideal because inconel alloys remain strong throughout a very wide temperature range. They retain strength when even aluminum and steel would begin to stretch and creep. Essentially, an Inconel 625 tube would be ideal for any kind of application that is going to require extreme temperatures.
Most Common Use
Inconel 625 is most commonly used in gas turbine engines. It was first introduced in the 1940s for use in jet engines. It was developed specifically for the whittle jet engine. After its development for jet engines, the alloy has expanded to other areas. Certain vehicles utilize an Inconel 625 tube in their turbochargers. Also, certain firearm manufacturers use the alloy in their suppressor baffles due to the incredible amounts of heat generated in the muzzle of a firearm.
NASCAR, Formula One, and some other high-powered automobile racing organizations use the alloy in their exhaust systems as well. It’s one of the few alloys that can reliably and consistently withstand the temperatures at exhaust of a high horsepower vehicle.
Do You Need It?
You could definitely benefit from an Inconel 625 tube depending on the application. Many people use the tubes for the exhausts of their motorcycles. If you have a high powered motorcycle, especially one of the rotary engines, you might need a 625 tube for an exhaust pipe. Furthermore, some people like to use them for the exhausts on their automobiles.
If you have a bigger business, you might use them for building turbos or jet engines. Inconel is an incredibly diverse metal with great use for high temperature applications. Any time temperatures exceed about 900 degrees Celsius, you should think about using 625.
