If you’re a small business owner opening your first office, or even the CEO of a big corporation looking to expand existing facilities, or even if you’re just an elementary school homeroom teacher who wants to provide his or her students with a comfortable learning environment, there is so much to consider, beyond color and style, that the process can seem a bit exhausting and overwhelming.
But when you get right down to it, considering just a few specific things about your wallcovering can save you time, energy and money in the long run.
Why Should I Care?
The fabric wallcovering in the waiting room of a doctor’s office might look nice, but it’s probably not the same kind of thing you want to see in a cafe or restaurant, right? While the material might feel really good, is it really the best choice to install in a classroom?
You could, conceivably, go into a wallcovering store, point out what you want, and let the chips fall where they may. Is that the smart thing to do, though? Probably not, especially if you’re on a tight budget and want to get the best wallcovering for your money.
Consider Colors Carefully
Let’s say you have your heart set on a color. Have you considered how it looks in the morning, versus its appearance in the late afternoon or evening? You should consider light reflectivity when it comes to both color and material. Brighter colors will seem brighter in the sunlight, and when the sun goes down too. Is that what you want at night though? If not, then a more subtle shade might be the best choice overall.
Wear and Tear
As nice as a fabric wallcovering looks in a high traffic environment, what matters just as much as appearance is strength. If you’re a hotel designer, you have to think about how careless weary travelers could be as they wheel their luggage down the hall, their bags bumping and scratching the wallcovering.
Fabric-backed vinyl will probably hold up better than vinyl-coated paper in a hotel. On the other hand, the vinyl-coated paper could be well-suited to a doctor’s office, or an elementary school classroom. There is no one-size-fits-all wallcovering, suitable for everyone’s needs.
Your Choices Matter…Even When it comes to Wallcoverings!
Your wallcoverings help to set the mood for those who enter your rooms. You should put as much care into the wallcoverings as you do the type of chairs and desks you choose.
In some sense, your wallcoverings matter even more than the phones you install: Black phones with a gray fabric wallcovering look better than with a yellow wallcovering, and even the shade of the color has an impact.
If you hadn’t put much thought into your wallcoverings before reading this, remember: Your choices matter!
